Review: Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street

When I was a high school student I had the challenging assignment of writing a paper on the positive effects of television on children--a topic still debated today, some 30 years later. The television show Sesame Street figured prominently in my report. This groundbreaking television show will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this November. Jim Henson, Frank Oz and the many Muppets they brought to life were just a few of the many talented people who made, and continue to make Sesame Street so unique. Street Gang: the Complete History of Sesame Street by Michael Davis is a fascinating look behind this phenomenon. It chronicles the show from its beginning as an idea mentioned during a dinner party conversation, to all the efforts to find funding and staff, and through its metamorphosis over nearly 40 years of broadcast. As a big fan of Jim Henson, I was interested to read about his life, work and early death. Fans of television, as well as anyone who works or lives with children will enjoy this book. I only wish it had been around when I had to write my English paper.
